🩸 Safe Blood for All: India Reviews Its Journey, Sets the Road Ahead
The National Review of Blood Transfusion Services was held on 22nd September 2026 at Ambedkar Bhawan, New Delhi convened by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and chaired by Dr. Rakesh Gupta, Additional Secretary (Public Health), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Director General, National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). It was graced by Dr. Loveneesh G Krishna (DGHS, MoHFW), Dr. Neeta Khurana (Addl. DGHS, MoHFW), Dr. Rakesh Gupta (AS, PH & DG, NACO), Sh. Pushpendra Rajput (JS, Drug & Food Regulation), Sh. Lalit Wadhwa (Secretary General, IRCS), Dr. Vanshree Singh (JS, IRCS), Dr. Megha Khobragade (DDG, BTS) and Smt. Bharti Sahai (Director, NACO), with IRCS State Secretaries and Chairman and SBTC representatives from across the country.
The Review benchmarked the five critical stages of the transfusion chain from licensing and renewal to record-keeping against ten Key Performance Indicators using data from e-Raktkosh, CDSCO, BBMS and FDA inspection records. Dr. Rakesh Gupta reaffirmed the national vision of safe blood in every district with zero transfusion-transmitted infections targeting at least one blood bank in every district. Backed by a time-bound action plan the State Blood Transfusion Councils the Indian Red Cross Society, FDA and CDSCO will work in close coordination to translate these national priorities into results on the ground with progress to be reviewed at the next meeting.
The Secretary General (IRCS) stressed that Red Cross blood centres must remain committed to safe blood collection, strict adherence to SOPs, updated records and timely licence renewal. He urged all branches to embrace digital adoption through e-Raktkosh, BBMS and ABHA-based donor traceability with biometric devices and staff training supported by IRCS. Together, we move closer to the goal of safe blood for every patient.
