The Indian Red Cross Society National Headquarters, convened an online meeting with all State and Union Territory Branches on 14 July 2026 to review monsoon flood preparedness and strengthen disaster response mechanisms across the country.
Chaired by Secretary General Shri Lalit Wadhwa, the meeting focused on assessing flood risks, preparedness plans, activation of disaster response teams, volunteer readiness, pre-positioning of relief materials, warehousing, logistics, emergency coordination, health and WASH preparedness, and timely assessment and reporting. The National Headquarters emphasized that effective preparedness is the key to minimizing the impact of floods and ensuring a swift humanitarian response.
The participants were urged to adopt a needs-based and community-centred approach to humanitarian assistance. Branches were advised to conduct rapid needs assessments within 72 hours of a disaster, ensure transparent beneficiary selection, maintain proper documentation in compliance with FCRA regulations, and adhere to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross.
The National Headquarters also highlighted the importance of digital data collection, professional relief distribution, strengthened logistics, and partnerships for transportation and procurement to improve the speed and efficiency of emergency response.
Representatives from Bihar, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and other State Branches shared region-specific challenges and suggestions, including the need for pre-positioned relief stocks in highly flood-prone areas and additional essential relief items.
Concluding the meeting, Secretary General Shri Lalit Wadhwa emphasized that preparedness is the most cost-effective investment in disaster management and called upon all branches to remain fully prepared, strengthen coordination with local authorities, update preparedness plans, and work collectively to reduce human suffering through timely, professional, and accountable humanitarian action.
