Indian Red Cross responds to the Avian Flu

It is learnt through media that over 1.85 lakh birds have been culled by the Rapid Response Team (RRT) deputed by the Central Government in and around Chinmeirong village in Manipur, where an outbreak of bird flu was confirmed on July 25th, 2007. No human infection has been reported in the State so far.

Prof (Dr) M. Lala Singh, Honorary Secretary, Manipur has informed that the Manipur State Branch has initiated action after the outbreak of the Avian Flu in the State and has started health education programme.

On 28th and 29th July the branch organized Street Corner meetings at 49 places and
distributed 1000 pamphlets on bird flu each in English, Hindi and local Manipuri language. The pamphlets were also published in local English and Vernacular newspapers. (The pamphlet on avian flu was prepared by the National Headquarters in 2005 and was translated into 11 regional languages)

The Branch is in regular touch with the National headquarters and is contemplating to supply masks and tamiflu medicine which can be used by the volunteers.
