Red Cross Relief to Leh

Indian Red Cross Society has responded to the cloud burst in Leh on 5th - 6th August, 2010 which has claimed 175 lives so far and left over 300 missing. Dr. S.P. Agarwal, Secretary General of the Indian Red Cross Society accompanied Chairman of the Society and Minister for Health & Family Welfare Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad to Leh the following day to assess the damage and the immediate needs of the affected people. They met senior officials of the State Government and offered support in the relief measures.

The National Headquarters has supplemented the efforts of the Jammu & Kashmir State Branch by sending relief items consisting of 1000 pcs. of woolen blankets, 1000 units of kitchen sets & 123 pairs of gum boots to help in rescue and relief operations. “Two water

 
sanitation units each with a capacity of providing 4000-5000 ltrs. of water per hour have also been provided. A team of three persons well versed in handling the equipments and relief supplies has also been stationed at Leh. All the supplies have been air lifted and the situation is being monitored by us on hourly basis”, informs Dr. S.P. Agarwal, Secretary General of the Indian Red Cross Society. There are also requests to restore family links. Red Cross expertise in dealing with such cases has been operationalized and the services have been offered to the local authorities.
 
 
Five officials of the Jammu & Kashmir Red Cross State Branch and its 50 volunteers plunged into rescue and relief work soon after the disaster struck. The State Branch immediately sent 100 tents, 1000 blankets, 500 kitchen sets, 100 torches and 60 first-aid boxes as an emergency measure for the affected.
